Well I'm just starting my rebuild 350lc so wish me luck, I've been sourcing various bits over the past 6months and have today started to put things into place, im going to rebuild fairly standard with a few upgrades, the bike isn't going to be for sale so so its for my own satisfaction on a Sunday blast๐ So to start barrels are at Pjme being rebored frame is at the powder coaters swinging arm and a few other bits are at the polishers I will be posting up some pics as I go along, just need to set it up 1st and of course I will be asking stupid questions so please bear with me

Been a bit slow waiting on parts to come back from various places, barrels are back from pjme rebored 2.5os head re-profiled and blasted ready for painting, Just picked up my crankcases from aqua blasters and am very happy with the nice clean finish, will now be able to start getting the motor together over the couple of weeks๐

Looking good Barney Vapoured cases are always a good start. Have you done the gear shaft bush mod ? Worth doing at this stage if you haven't already Dusty

Hi The area where the steel gear shaft passes through the Lc case on the sprocket side is ally, and can wear over the years where the harder steel shaft passes through it. On the later Ypvs cases, Yamaha fitted a steel bush to save wear on the case. Norbo sells a PTFE lined bush in his shop that you can fit into the Lc case to solve any wear issues. The existing hole needs to be reamed out as the bush is an interference fit. Now is the time to do it before you build the bottom end. I can add a couple of pics later - Flikr isn't working for me at the moment Dusty

Hi mate, here you are; 20160205_094843_zpsmgdcjhuu by David Miller, on Flickr and from inside the gearbox; 20160205_094906_zpsgtjuo5xf by David Miller, on Flickr When I built my 350lc engine, I wanted to future proof it as much as possible. I did buy a reamer off ebay but then decided it could be expensive if I didn't get it right, so I took it to my local engineers who measured it all up, reamed out the hole and pressed the bush into place - cost me a tenner ! Worth doing at this stage in my opinion. Dusty

Thanks dusty that's great๐ Yes I agree with you on future proofing as much as you can on the build, luckily for me one of my mates who I raced with is a CNC machinist and just loves two strokes and just so happens to be helping me build the motor( or should I say I'll be making the coffee whilst he puts it together๐๐) Cheers Barney

Brilliant, then I would get him to do it. Common oil leaks can usually be traced to either the gear shaft oil seal or the neutral switch cover. If the shaft is a sloppy fit due to wear in the case, then the oil seal is gonna have a harder time stopping oil leaking past. Same as the gear shaft itself. The oil seal can wear a groove in the shaft so even with a new seal, oil can leak past the worn area. Dusty

And I should add, I'm sure someone on here mentioned they did the bush mod at the other end of the shaft, where it passes through the case on the clutch side. Obviously not an oil leak issue, but more to support the shaft equally at both ends. Yamaha didn't go that far with the pv cases, and don't know if it's really necessary but for the cost of a bush, and an extra cup of coffee, it may be worth doing. Dusty

Iโm just in the process of putting a order together for norbo and on the list is a new gear shaft as mine has slight wearing on where the seal sits, probably be ok but I donโt want to put it all together and have to pull it apart again, makes sense to put two bushes as youโve said will balance it up and stop the wear...... Best get the kettle on๐๐

Peebee - the Ypvs cases has the bush fitted as standard. Yamaha must have realised the effect a steel shaft turning in an alloy housing needed some modification to prevent wear and subsequent leaks. Dusty
