Shakedown run today, was only supposed to be a quick one, however she was performing fantastically so I carried on enjoying myself. Super pleased with her, resent changes are new sport smart max 2tyres - this is a work in progress that I bought from Dusty who took it in pix for one of his perfect examples, the tyres warm up quick and feel as if they are made for the bike. New steel 43 tooth rear steel sprocket. New blue front master cylinder reservoir I've recessed the rear light properly setting it square with the frame etc curtesy of Dusty's post ( thanks Dusty) I've eased the fuel tap curtesy of Arrow's post thanks :-) I've fixed the charging problem, which turned out to be incorrect wiring and re wired the kill switch.. Fixed the power valve operation, it was disconnected when I got her now all programmed and set up kind of ok however the valves aren't perfectly in since which is a job for later on... ive had the pipes ceramic clear coated, took play out of the headstock bearings .. Changed the break lever, modified a clutch lever to match the break lever.. re conditioned the carb with oem parts.. choke float valves, jets , needles all from Allens performance except the jets which were from norbo.. Nearly time to make her look pretty now, jobs on the list are: front brake anti rattle shims, mirrors, maybe? What are people's thoughts on this...get mudguard sprayed.. fit gold did x ring chain (ordered) remove the white decals on the clock faces ... take out the play in the mono shock to swing arm bolt...change the reflectors from twin to one central at the very top..... I'm sure I will add to the list however it's great making mods and seeing the beauty in the change...

Dono, I've seen your bike at Dusty's a few times. It's a thing of beauty after Dusty's magic hands have been in action. It won't be long before you put your personal touches on the bike.
Good progress, like it

Thanks Mark, I've been after one for a couple of years, I had a stroke late April which paralyzed me completely down the left hand side, after recovering really well I realized I was a lot weaker and struggled too much to get my blade out of the garage, so it was an ideal time to get the hybrid, nice and light and very easy to move around, most of all I feel super young again while riding her and come back with a grin from ear to ear..even managed to ride her today with boots on and change gear ok( almost no feeling in foot) bloody hard to get neutral though...

some people find them useful others not so but there a doddle to fit an the selector mechanism is super easy to set up , personally never have the need to use one in a standard bike using original footrests n selector , rode of my p/v,s for 15yrs as my only transport...only problems I ever encountered was its insatiable demand for fuel n oil , an keeping upright in winter!!! What I do know is in my hybrid even with all new internals set up correctly Neutral pain in the arse , with the pro I could ride around an select neutral in the Mrs slippers..

Hi Mark Good to see you are riding and enjoying the bike I think the standard seat looks great - a good choice to change I think. It was always a bike with a lot of potential, and great that it already had all the expensive bits fitted ! I'm sure you'll tweak it up to be a lovely hybrid And great that you are finding it good therapy too . Keep the updates and pics coming, I will be really pleased to see your progress. Regards Dusty

Oh, and forgot to say, you look like you made a good job of the other tank decal !! Nightmare job Dusty Thanks Dusty, Yes I'm really loving it, gives s great sense of achievement when each job is done, apart from the tank decal, your not kidding a nightmare job, I've done them before however I thought I was never going to get it right, in fact I had mentally decided I needed to buy a new set and have another go and got angry with it 1/ this is usually where it goes proper wrong and 2/ I'm not supposed to get angry any more after my stroke, but as if by magic it started to go right. When that was done I just felt huge relief lol. The misses caught me leaning against the car just staring at it the other day, she came out to see if I was alright lol I told her I was just enjoying looking at it. :-)

This is the old gear change linkage with lots of play and also the two levers are not parallel. I've fitted one of norbo's billet levers and replaced the remaining ball joint and setup with both levers parallel which I'm hoping will help gear selection and more importantly neutral selection. Unfortunately my new longer chain had not arrived today as promised so wasn't able to test it :-(

Decided to have a go at the clocks today Turns out the clock faces were just decals which pealed of easily enough and the old faces were just passable underneath. What I didn't bargain for is using the scissor method of removing the needles, how they would fly into the air so much, the rev counter needle was pushed on so far that when it came off it flew about 25 feet, landed on the wooden floor and snapped... flip or something like that, I made a tint cenotaph jig ang glued together with aroldite. Not sure if it will last so ordered one off eBay. Couldn't get in with the plier method of re crimping the metal over so peened it over with a small hammer, worked well.. All done for now anyway and fixed back on the bike :-) looks a million times better.... took soo long though!

Hi Mark Clocks look great mate😉 I think they suit the bike better being standard. Next time you ping a needle off have the clock inside a plastic bag. That way it wont fly off and get damaged. Its a very satisfying job refurbibg clocks though and yours look great😁 Whats next on the list ?

Thanks Dusty, that's a good idea with he bag.. Next job was the chain which arrived today Came with a split pin which is pants, so got a proper rivet link Just a bit more work but it's not coming off that's for sure only thinks is the ball on my rivet tool looks a bit sorry for itself now lol . Took I if a spin after fitting the chain, not sure what was going on but engine revs at idle were low.. any how I'll sort what's causing that, only hope it's not ELECTRICAL after removing loads of connectors in the headlight after doing the clocks.. SUPER pleased to say the job on the gear selector has helped getting neutral soooo much , goes in every time with a blip of the throttle from second down. Yeah!!! Well pleased. The next job is the tank, Managed to put a tiny scratch in it and rubbing it with t cut scratch remover very quickly got rid of all the silver... balls .. I will mask it and spray it as the tank decal is a living nightmare to replace

Fitted these today also a .3mm shim in-between gear lever and circlip, which takes out a little more play, finding the new zero play gear lever setup so much easier to get neutral.. will put some Silkolene light gear oil in tomorrow and see if that gives me another step change :-) Bike seamed to be running real rich at low revs after I had taken instruments off, thought it was the birds nest wiring in the headlight but after checking that I fiddled with the pilot screws and idle screws balancing the carbs up and seams to be much better, think I could do with an instrument to get it more accurate though rather than using my old ears fir increased revs, any suggestions Guys ? Cheers Dono

You can buy xt500 needles to replace your broken one Thanks, yes I had read that on the forum and bought one from eBay, think it was £9.95 and although the needle repair has worked it will bug me that it's a repair so it's a job for a rainy day, I'm sure we will have a few of those coming up now we're at the end of summer.. cheers Dono

So today I did several jobs, the first being the spray job on the tank decals.... not the best at spraying however with the decals being expensive and also a real tricky job to say the least, I thought I would give it a go and cross my fingers.... Think the masking is ok, fingers crossed I had this silver in stock in the garage, I test sprayed it on some card and it looked the right shade.. Bingo, job done, I'm happy with that that's for sure.. I replaced the pretty front brake reservoir as it turned out to be total pants as it leaked, I tried to fix it but decided to replace it as I didn't like brake fluid dripping on my baby! I also took the carbs off and moved the needles up by moving the circlip down one notch, I had changed this when I replaced the needles for brand new ones as the bike was felt rich just before it went into the power band, I think that the new needles would also have made a difference in leaning out the mixture, as a result I was getting some pinking which made me think I was going to put a horrible hole in my pistons.. I took it out for a thrashing and it now feels really nice, think that's me happy with the carb settings for now as I plan to get a pair of mutts nutts pipes and maybe visit his dyno to get them dialled in 100 percent... got to sort out the uneven power valves first I also dropped the oil and replaced with silkolene light gear oil, just to see if it made the neutral selection any better, it felt worse, but I have got it slightly over filled so will reduce it a tad to see if that helps .
