A successful weekend tinkering in the garage.
Pistons delivered to machinist to have the bores sized for the new pistons. New clutch basket fitted. Started going through the bags of parts to start cleaning them up. Polished the power valve covers and thermostat housing and started cleaning up several bits for painting. Ended up sandblasting the covers to remove a previous owner's spray can antics! Also cleaned up the sloppy power valve joiner in the mill to re-face the flat section the valves locate on and the two joint faces so it closes on the valves more effectively. It's now a good solid joint with no play between the valves.

Here's the results of the weekend.
I've painted the side covers to try and match the engine cases and cleaned up the barrels. The barrels will go off for vapour blasting to get the gunk I couldn't get.
I've also matched the transfer ports and found some issues with the exhaust stud threads that have been butchered by a previous owner. One will need a thread insert and the other needs filling and redrilling as it's on a significant angle.
Also waiting on more bits from the US and UK before I can start the engine rebuild. I managed to find a brake lever to fit the RGV Master cylinder and just need to find a master cylinder rebuild kit now.

Thanks guys. It has a matt clear coat on it so hopefully will withstand some wear and tear. It'll be inside the fairing so shouldn't get too many knocks & chips.

Just got some shiny bits from Norbo and threw them together for a quick mockup.
Now have all the bits to start rebuilding the motor over the weekend.
Have also finished with the frame and it's off to be sand blasted tomorrow and start priming it over the weekend.

Progress update: Motor has gone together pretty well so far. Discovered I had the wrong head cups, so trying to organise some replacements.
Frame has been bead blasted and front brake caliper and master cylinder refurb kits arrived. Lots to do.

Are you doing an air test?

Air test?
I am getting the bits together to make a leak down tester, for when the assembly is completed.

You must be confident I did that then had to strip it all down,I would test it before fitting the clutch and stator so you can see if it leaks

I'm either naive or confident. I'll let you know after the test! 😯

While waiting for some final engine parts to arrive, I've started on the frame and some other jobs. The frame is now bead blasted, rust treated and undercoated, and should be painted by next weekend. I'll have to setup a temporary spray booth in my garage which takes a bit of time.
I've also opened up the front calipers and master cylinder and they were a mess of old congealed brake fluid, so should work much better after a clean and rebuild kits fitted.

Geez Phil you font muck around lol. I found this & thought it might be similar in the paint style your looking for. Found it on North American rz fb page. On that same fb page look for David Zilla project. I think it very close to fairing you're using. Cant hurt to have a chat with him & exchange idea's.

Thanks mate,
That's amazingly close to the result I'm looking for. Just shows that its all been done before!
I'd be very pleased if it turned out like that.
Cheers, Phil

I have too much crap in my garage! It took quite a bit to make enough space to setup the spray booth, but I finally got there. Couple of bikes parked on the deck and the other half of the garage is an occupational safety nightmare! A day and a half to build it and 5 minutes to tear it down!
The frame is now painted and ready to start bolting bits back on. It's a milestone in the project, so I'm pretty chuffed (pleased!). (just hope I haven't forgotten a bracket!)
Have also started rebuilding the front calipers and got one side blasted in the cabinet.

Looks great! That is some shine on the swingarm! Mouse I cheated with the swingarm. I normally do my own polishing but outsourced the swingarm to a professional polishing place. They did a good job.

Latest update: The new Cool head domes arrived last week so after some time messing around measuring squish I have the motor all buttoned up. I then did a pressure test and found some leaks around the power valves and exhaust joints. Fixed those up and it tested ok.
The motor is now in the bike and the clutch cover temporarily attached to see how it looks. The forks are being now being reconditioned and the calipers painted. The fork oil was some of the dirtiest, smelliest oil I've seen and definitely needed replacing! Does anyone have any advice/tips about getting the old fork seals out of the RGV forks to separate the inner and out tubes?
Lots of little jobs now cleaning up and painting parts. Thinking about a new ignition/PV system with Banshee coils, but I don't have a dyno or know of anyone local with 2T experience, so I'm not sure how easy they will be to setup from scratch. Any advice?

Thanks Mouse,
It's shame to hide it behind a fairing.... maybe a half fairing?

No, i like the full fairing. Not sure the pipes look quite right though, sorry, they look a bit long and low, but that is only my opinion Mouse
