My 81 came with a black painted Alloy cap (with wee arrow) Dunno if it was OEM for the bike. But I'm the 3rd owner. My 82 has the plastic cap

Yep, likewise, but someone can put an offer in. I had a very early 350lc when new, and for the life of me cant remember what the fuel cap was.. too busy grinning :-)

It is..... It's for the Lc - superseded part no.

Oh Ive just noticed you were the seller ?.... lol
I've got 2 LCs, both have matching locks with genuine keys, one bike has the smooth plastic cap with the offset lock, the other has the same cap you just sold. They both look identical at the rear.
Are we saying that the grainy finish one with the slightly raised centre and the lock in the centre is a genuine cap but wouldn't have been fitted to a 4L0 when new ?

Its an interesting distinction... what does constitute 'a correct genuine cap'?
1, What was delivered originally with the bike...
2, using the part number, even if its superseded...
With other LC parts we dont treat superseded parts as 'original' for the purpose of restoring an LC to original, ie bolts that are OEM but not the right colour, or YPVS parts that work but replace the old 4L0 parts, eg gearchange parts. But, that is perhaps only for the purists, and those doing 'pure' builds wouldn't consider aftermarket mirrors, headlight rims or seat covers either.
So, While technically 14Cheeks is right that the cap is a 4L0 cap, it was not the same design as the ones fitted to LCs when new, its the later substituted part by Yamaha.
I started this thread cos Im doing a somewhat anoraky build on my LC, and that means I guess when it comes to fuel caps anyone reading this later would also be after the same info. Therefore we should agree that only offset lock, smooth caps were truly original equipment for the 4L0. That doesnt take away from the later design, its fine for 99% of owners, but the olive green brigade would not consider the later superseded style to be 'original' in the context of 1 above.

As above, agree with jon, also the key is totally different to an 'original' key (one of the easier ways to tell, if you were one of the peeps that had an LC first time around?)

I totally agree, its one of the bugbears ive been trying to fix for my restoration. This week I bought one of the older steel blanks and had it cut to match the new keyset for my bike, its not quite right of course, but its better. I just couldnt find an original B blank with the older plastic top, or even any decent condition plastic tops to use on my later new keys.

I've got a NOS alloy cap that can be prised out of my hands if you wanted a original one.

Yeah, that level of detail doesn't bother me, even on my nice standard LC but it's all good for the knowledge bank Every day is a School day eh ?
