I kid you not....the bike ran quite well with these carbs. what's everyone's favorite cleaner? A guy I might on the local ride today has an ultrasonic cleaner...said I could use it...I'm thinking about giving that a shot. I got a couple of carb rebuild kits from Norbo but...I think I might need from that the gasket and float needle
Completely strip the carbs, inc removing the needle jet (emulsion tube) & use the ultrasonic cleaner. Blow out all jets and airways with an air line & rebuild with the new kits. Make sure you don not mix the float bowls, they are different.
still got a bit to go ...here's before & after of the emulsion tube and the body & bowl after about 4 x 30min stints in the ultrasonic....and some elbow grease...
Just stripped and serviced my carbs due to an overflow issue and they looked in reasonable condition. Amazing how yours performed in that state. the only sign on mine was a barely visible mark on the float needle. US cleaner certainly does the business, I think I've got carb envy..
Typically I did more research AFTER I bought the unit....turns out a company called James makes some good ones in the UK but I of course visited fleabay and got this. www.ebay.com/itm/311013126895 most common thought is: it's not a wonder machine....best idea is to clean whatever you have as much as possible and then the ultra machine will finish it. I thought I was going to throw everything in it but truly it's for things like carbs that have nooks and crannies you don't want to be poking things down. The last time I got carbs unltrasonic-ed at the bike shop it cost $200. I've got seven to do so seemed to make sense to buy one of my own.
I put in the engine vibration bar mounting bolts which came out nice- but that was mainly because they've spent most of their life preserved in 2-stroke. I wanted to do every fastener I have- but ironically the bit of the bolt that comes out gleaming the most is the bit you never see.
It appears that the best solution is Dawn washing up liquid. There's threads that mention vinegar, lemon juice, Jizer etc...but I've been happy so far with the Dawn.
Done the carb bodies going to do all the tiny pieces next with a kind of a sieve ball thing which I'm waiting for.
also 4L04ever's advice to "Dry off after ultrasonic cleaning and give then a spray with WD40 and wipe off after to stop any corrosion." is valid for as soon as you take it out it starts going kinda mouldy....see white spots. On spraying it- the metal almost seems to soak up the WD.
Ok first things first: if you are even able to watch this movie turn your volume DOWN then maybe bring up slowly. Noise is brutal- but I'm posting this as you can literally see the dirt being lifted off the small carb components like the idle screw & spring. the container is a hint I got from another thread. bottom of a plastic milk carton keeping the pieces in place.
yes that window was like that- deep in a thread somewhere someone mentioned that they screwed up the window in their master cylinder using brakecleaner....I reckon someone unwittingly used some carb cleaner on this one and that was that....which will make them harder to balance- yet something tells me balancing the two is a little more complicated than trying to see if the slides go past the tiny window at the same time... searching carb balance
Stupid question time but I take it milk carton doesn't melt when cleaner has a heater set to 80degrees?
If YA can't ride it Park it!!
I own a 2 stroke which is bad .....but i buy dolphin friendly tuna so i feel im doin my bit for the environment If your not livin on the edge ur takin up too much room!

Vapour blasting does that too, unless masked off of course, but to be honest no great loss. It's only a check for full throttle without having to remove the carb rubbers.
Can't beat removing carb rubbers/filters and getting your head in there to balance properly. Slacken idle screws right back and adjust each cable so the slides open together (can use lolly sticks as mentioned). Tighten adjusters and recheck. Open to full throttle and make sure each slide is fully open at the same time. Adjust cable at throttle to take up any slack. Screw in each idle screw to approximately the same number of turns as they were before (assuming idle speed was fine) and fine tune each idle screw so that the slides open at the same time again (without touching the adjusters). That's the way I've always done it anyway.
I tried a different way & am happy with the results. I soda blasted everything first then ultra sonic cleaned to be sure. Same bowls above soda blasted only. Carbs before & after.
Hi men. I have bought an Ultrasonic cleaner. Just wanted to ask one of my silly questions. As it heats up to 80degrees is it safe to put in the choke plunger/float/throttle stop screw and fuel needle valve as these all contain rubber or are plastic? Will they melt?
Cheers.
