Hi All, and a happy new Year! I am looking to increase the size of the race tyres on my RD350 31K this year. I was running AVON AM20/22 (front, rear) with standard sizes i.e. 90/90 at the front and 110/80 at the rear. I am considering going up to Avon AM22/23 with 110/80 at the front and 130/70 at the rear, does anyone have any experience running this size tyre?
I have a mate who is running Dunlop KR124 with front 3.5/3.25 and rear 3.75/5.00 at the rear and that seems to go fine.
Any comments? Thanks,
Dave

Hi Steve, the most popular tyres I have seen over the last year have been Avon AM20/22/23 (race tyres) they use the same naming for road tyres so be careful you specify race tyres if you buy, and the Dunlop KR124(A) as I mentioned above. For classic bike racing you can take a look at : www.dunloptyres.co.uk/ourTyres/motorsport/motorcycle/ for the Dunlop information and www.avonracing.com/club_page.asp for Avons. As for the specific sizes ...... I just talked to a guy representing Avon, and he told me to go for the AM22 110/80VB18 at the front and a AM23 130/650VB18 (Cantilever) at the rear. The Cantilever allows them to fit a wide tyre to a relatively small rim (standard I think is 2.15" on the 31K). On both pages mentioned they give you minimum and maximum rim sizes for the tyres. Hope it helps, Dave

It is cheap - I have no idea how the bike would react to having the same size on both ends.. You need to make sure that the tyre is a RACE tyre as I think AVOn have the same model numbers for road tyres

factory recomended sizes are the best fitment. as in best possible handling. Experienced racers know this v well.. beginners refuse to heed their advise though .. untill they figure it out for themselves :-) Way of the world.

aint no matter the size , just the way you use it ....
I do agry with Bare , stock size allows incredibble handling and good top speed .

Why do you want to increase the tyre size? Are you running out of tyre? I raced my aircooled RD with 90/90 on a 2.15 rim & 110/80 on a 2.5 rim & never thought I needed a wider tyre. I reckon if you put a wider tyre on the narrow rim it would ruin the handling.... wider ain't always better. That my tuppens worth!! Col.
