They work fine for me, sorry you can see em Kev :/
Haha, The problem with building motards is that for some reason everyone thinks they should be quick and cheap to do, its only some wheels and brakes.... er... LOL

Yeah , and then you find out that all rims aren't centered on the center line of the hub , and that steering geometry and tyre specs are all very carefully thought out before the bike was manufactured , lol !!

Almost all of the pics of my bike are gone from this thread, but I watched this video and felt like maybe they had seen my bike as inspiration? It appeared on my site and the XT500 forum and im sure pics are all over the net now of course.
Lots of trick bits they made, some of which i actually like. The front and rear guards in alloy are cool as they ape the polished tank, but the headlight 'thing' doesnt work imho. The tank being a hazy polish looks awful sadly for the owner - at least my OEM polished up like a mirror.
The wide stainless footpegs are the same as mine, from Kedo and silly exy priced. Almost the same fatbars as well.
There are some cool bits on here. I almost did the Motogadget switches and hidden wiring and a digital gauge, but decided I liked the OEM switches and clocks better. I may still do a digital dash as its simpler for the speedo cable run on the opposing side drive of the KTM wheel if nothing else. I also did a 12v conversion on mine, tho i still run points and wish i didnt... its 2024.
These guys also have the hot cam which mine doesnt have and they say big values which i didnt add, tho mine is the later big valve head. hmm... tho I do have the higher comp piston and the very nice TM36-68 pumper carb.
I also very much like the FMF Power Bomb in their header, that would dull some of the noise mine makes and who complains if it did add a bhp or two. I may have to do that mod, but it means cutting the posh and very shiny stainless Kedo header pipe... hmm...
I really hate their use of the Staintune silencer... geez, I had hoped we'd seen the last of that particular 'Aussie Icon'. Stainless heavy as hell silencers... I received 'the gift' of two of em on my Duke2 640. Really stupid loud boat anchors if the DB killers werent fitted, and all that weight high up at the back was silly for the COG... Also the XT500 is a really small bike and modern / big bike silencers dont work on them as there is little room from the side panel back. Very few mufflers on 500s actually muffle a big bore / HC engine for that reason, unless they look like comedy additions due to the size.
Theirs runs later KTM forks than mine, not least as I know that its really hard to find the RWU WP50s now in decent shape... and they sadly use the weedy offroad Brembo and small disk... meh... I also dislike their 19" wheel choice and their lack of fancy swinger, they are not exy and much cooler than the OEM steel tube IMHO thats why i have one... and in keeping with the ally tank etc.
I love their 'Excel' logo rims... cos they are the same as mine and very hard to find now new as they are seriously old models now. The tyres look the part I guess for their build.
All in all a fun bike they built and I noted that theirs starts much easier than mine... so not as high comp as mine I'd say. Its one thing Id not do again if i was given the choice, mine kicks back like a mule on crack if you get it wrong it will break your foot bones, ankle and maybe leg... no joke. I sometimes think i should let some yoofs try and steal it... they wont do that again lol

I like you're XT 500 JonW đź‘Ť My dad's mate kept his XT 500 in the living room under the stairs and ride it into the garden everytime he went out on it. I have heard they are nice to ride but a leg killer starting them.

Yeah starting them standard is fine, but once you up the compression its not so easy. usual rules apply tho, find TDC, go slightly over, kick all the way through and hold the lever down with foot (dont do the 2T prod), dont add any gas when doing it. There is window to the crank and it has a tell tale for just after TDC for those who cant feel such things lol. There is a leccy foot now for these, but its very very exy... I was tempted as it would make the bike more usuable. hmm...

Anorak update. The very early (76)XT’s didn’t have the helpful kickstart window. I still have my XT, though not as pretty as Jon’s, and once you have the “knack” of starting them it is very easy. I’ve had a worse kickback from my old MZ back in the day.

I learned the hard way with a modded XL500. Had some XR500 parts fitted
Tried starting it wearing trainers, it kicked back, limped for weeks, thought it had broke my foot 🤣

I dont reckon anyone needs the window really, the rider should learn the proper way to start a recalcitrant big 4 stroke single not rely on gadgets. I learnt on a 620SC KTM, no auto deomp or windows on those things lol

Had some XR500 parts fitted Tried starting it wearing trainers, it kicked back, limped for weeks, thought it had broke my foot 🤣 Steve Haha, funnily enough my XL500R did the same to me even with the auto decomp and less compression. It was a project i bought and i wanted to get it running before a tidy up, i kicked and kicked and kicked... nothing... eventually it got me. Turned out it was an airfilter totally soaked solid with what was wet mud that had dried. i didnt think to check it... idiot. One of the things that annoys me with the tuned XT is that if you pull the clutch cover off to repaint it (ive had multiple peeling issues and need to PC it), then you mess up the points and timing. You need to start it to adjust it while running to get it to actually start well... which is really hard to do of course. Catch 22. My old XL500R... I'd always wanted one... the tidy up became a decade long search or rare parts for a one year bike and a much bigger rebuild than expected.... and it was rubbish compared to the XT500 lol
