hey guys , wot are you running on your bikes ?
mine is total standard, 4L1-00 carbs brand new OE jets & needles from Allens .... had it set at: needle clip pos 4 190 mains 20 pilots air screw 1 &1/8 out it ran ok but was very burbley at 4-5000 rpm but cleared when offered full throttle up to 6000rpm... to try and improve I changed to : 22.5 pilots (as fitted to 1981 bikes) 195 main clip pos 4 just had test ride, took screwdriver to play with air screws, but it seems worse, but will still rev passed when offered full throttle again, would you change clip pos to 3 or 2 to lean it up abit?? as now its seems much richer and is I guess..

Hi & welcome Air screw will only affect idle &first part throttle opening ,so put that back std for the time being ,,, if its ok at top end that would suggest your probably ok on the main , from what you describe would suggest a little rich in the mid range. so drop the needle a notch at a time and see if it improves

I am watching your progress on this because mine is exactly the same, runs great up to 5000 then stutters for 1000revs then flys at 6k,its annoying when setting off because just as you get going it starts stuttering. I whipped the plugs out after a run today and found the outer edge black and oily, further investigation needed,I think

But, I thought all 250 4L1s had this problem.

my 350 has similar prob.but has just been rebuilt, been advised this may sort itself out once its run in and been thrashed.mine is ok to about 4 and a half, then sort of stutters on a steady throttle.if i open throttle,it clears and pulls.if i wind it slowly it stutters up to around 5k,then clears.will be interested in your findings.

it pulls away fine, its 1/4 to half throttle where the problem lies, standard setting is well known for the splutter, but I'm just avin a play to see if I can make it better, or I go back to how it was a live with it, mines a new build aswell but I dont think they get better with miles...

i think the point being coz of running in,the plugs are likely to oil up a little due to low revs? im halfway thro running in,so i can wind her on a little now, will let you know if it gets any better after runnin a few more revs.

This may or may not help.you ,, although mine is a 350 I have 4l1.00 carbs fitted, I played with this for days and ended up with this ,, 22.5 pilots ,, 170 mains & needle 2nd notch from the top , (5k1 needles ) clean as a whistle all the way through ,,

Air screw set at 1,1/8 .. I started with 220 mains ;with it being a 350 & it laughed in my face , so I went back to 190 as per 250 set up ,, better but not right, then reading that the early 350 had 160 mains I tried that and all seemed good , now worried I may be weak I went up to 170s & still ok ,then played with the needles from there ,, plug colour is good & have done about 1500 mile so far ,,

Holy Moses that's quick for a 250, found that sweet spot, hold tight.. settings I finished with are as follows : air screw 1 turn out 22.5 pilot 195 main needle clip pos 3 plug chop, chocolate brown both sides, pulls hard in the band ;D ;D the 4/5000 rpm stutter has gone....
